Renée Ary Directs Integration of Sonoma-Cutrer into Duckhorn Portfolio

April 21, 2026

Renée Ary is directing the winemaking integration of Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards into the Duckhorn Portfolio. Ary serves as the Executive Vice President of Winemaking at the company headquarters in St. Helena. This project follows the completion of the acquisition of the Sonoma brand from Brown-Forman. The move consolidates major luxury wine production assets in the North Coast. It shifts the balance of the regional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir market.

The Duckhorn Portfolio acquired Sonoma-Cutrer for approximately $400 million in a combination of cash and stock. This transaction gave Brown-Forman a 21.5 percent ownership stake in Duckhorn. The acquisition includes the brand and its extensive vineyard holdings. These assets represent a significant expansion for Duckhorn into the Russian River Valley. The company now manages a broader array of premium cool-climate sites.

Ary leads the effort to align production standards across these new properties. She joined Duckhorn Vineyards in 2003 as a laboratory manager. She became the fourth winemaker in the history of the winery in 2014. Her tenure at the estate includes over twenty harvests. She now oversees the technical direction for all ten brands in the portfolio. These brands include Kosta Browne, Goldeneye, and Calera.

The physical assets of Sonoma-Cutrer include over 1,100 acres of estate vineyards. These sites are located in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations. Key vineyards in the deal are the Owsley, Les Pierres, and Vine Hill properties. These sites are known for cooling maritime influences and diverse soil profiles. The Les Pierres vineyard features rocky soils that produce mineral-driven Chardonnay. The Owsley vineyard provides fruit for high-volume luxury bottlings.

Management of these vineyards is a primary focus for the winemaking team. Sonoma-Cutrer has maintained a long-term commitment to sustainable viticulture. The vineyards are certified under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Ary is integrating these sustainability practices with existing environmental programs at Duckhorn. This effort involves coordinating with vineyard managers across multiple counties.

The acquisition includes the production facility in Windsor. This winery is equipped for premium Chardonnay production at scale. It features specialized equipment for whole-cluster pressing and barrel fermentation. Ary is working with the winemaking staff at the Windsor site to ensure consistency. Cara Morrison remains the lead winemaker for Sonoma-Cutrer. Morrison has focused on the brand's Chardonnay program for several decades.

This development matters because it changes the competitive landscape for California luxury wine. The Duckhorn Portfolio now controls a vast supply of estate-grown fruit in top appellations. This reduces their reliance on the open grape market. It provides more control over quality and pricing. WineBusiness reported that the deal strengthens Duckhorn's position in the premium segment.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the deal helps Duckhorn diversify its white wine offerings. Before this acquisition, Duckhorn was best known for its Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The addition of a Chardonnay-focused brand rounds out the portfolio for national distribution. The deal gives Duckhorn a stronger foothold in Sonoma County. Most of their previous holdings were in Napa Valley and the Anderson Valley.

Practical implications for the local wine industry are significant. The consolidation of vineyard management may lead to changes in local labor needs. It affects how fruit is allocated to different price points. Smaller producers in the Russian River Valley are watching how this impacts land values. The integration of such a large brand requires careful logistical planning. Ary must balance the distinct identities of each label while centralizing business operations.
